First, what would you tell your daughter by way of instruction on the topic of men and what type of man you should marry? How bout Tim McGraw’s list?
- the half that makes you whole
- he has a poet’s soul
- and the heart of a man’s man
Uh . . . no. If you’re interested in what God’s Word would say, you must read Thabiti’s post (What A Husband Must Be) here.
Here’s an excerpt.
The first half of the sermon lists five things that drive women to marry men who are not prepared to lead in marriage. I would agree with Baucham’s assessment that these are five popular things that cloud a woman’s judgment and leads to regrettable and disobedient marriage decisions.
Second, while addressing with my daughter what type of man she should be praying for and looking for, I as her Daddy have a responsibility to model that to her in the way I husband her Mother. Even further, I have a responsibility to model what Godly husbanding looks like to my boys so that they might become the Godly delight and blessing to some other girl’s parents when their parents evaluate them as future husbands for their daughters! Very convicting as I read through these “Must be’s” as a husband! I suspect it will be for you as well.
Again, an exerpt to encourage you to read further.
4. Must lead in selflessness. “…nourishes and cherishes….” The husband should be the first one in the family to go without, sacrifice, or lay it down for the family. “If he’s not, then he’s shortsighted. He doesn’t realize what you’re building for the future.”
Thanks Thabiti for an excellent encouragement and resource for Godly wisdom on marriage present and marriage future for our kids.
