John 18:36-37 (ESV) Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world." Then Pilate said to him, "So you are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world— to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice."
I hate politics and the Church’s obsession with it. I really do. If I have to hear one more comment about Tom Foley I think I’ll puke. It literally makes me nauseous. Not because of what Foley did, but because he is part of "THE" party for Christians to work with, work through in order to restore "family values", "faith based values" etc, etc, etc, to the American way of life. With Foley’s not so surprising moral failure, the Republican bashing in the press, and by implication, the bashing of the Church ("religious right") has just started, and it will only grow more vehement as elections approach.
Jesus never promised to work through governments to bring about His Kingdom’s redemption, liberty, or life. He never advocated democracy as the source of our "inalienable rights" (life, liberty, pursuit of happiness (property)).
This is the point of the failure in Iraq. The Iraqi’s DO NOT need democracy. The Iraqi’s DO NEED Jesus! They are NOT motivated to evil and sin and debauchery because of years under the thumb and gun-butt of Saddam Hussein. They are that way because they worship a lie in allah and islam, and their hearts are blinded by their father the devil who is the father of lies, evil, murder, and all the debauchery that they practice as a way of life!
As long as middle-easterners worship evil, it matters not at all what type of government that they erect. They are motivated by religion, by belief in a lie. Erect a democracy and they will be democratic murderers and democratic car bombers, and democratic terrorists. Government does not transform the heart! It never has, and it never will.
Do you want to see Iraq not be the country of evil that it is? Then labor to see the American Church of Jesus Christ send over thousands of "troops" in the form of church planters and evangelists who will bring light to darkness, the promise of life to a world of death through the preaching of the resurrected Christ! Do this under the military protection of the state which would be a great example of the Church using the state as she exercises her God given authority (Rom 13) as a means to build the Kingdom God’s way; through the Gospel, not democracy.
Our "inalienable rights" are found only in Jesus and only by His grace
Jesus is life
John 14:6 (ESV) Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Jesus’ Words and abiding in them is liberty,
John 8:31-32 (ESV) So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
and the pursuit of happiness (a perfect city) is found only in Jesus.
John 15:11 (ESV) These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
John 17:13 (ESV) But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
John 14:2-3 (ESV) In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.
He is the same Jesus who operates redemptively in communist countries and in lands run by dictators and despots.
Folks, let’s get it right Biblically; Jesus Kingdom IS NOT OF THIS WORLD. It’s just not. Let’s spend our time bearing witness to the Way, the Truth, the Life, the Gospel, JESUS. Not through legislation, not through men who enamor us with rhetoric of family values, and faith based initiatives. Not in plaques of the Ten Commandments hanging in schools and court houses.
Let’s do it through lives that bear witness to the truth, to ways of speaking, thinking, and acting in the daily milieu of life as we work, live, and play, in our schoolrooms, in our malls, in our places of work, in our courtrooms, in our neighborhoods; in short, everywhere, all the time.
If we were as busy doing this as in being concerned about who "we’re" going to elect so that the dreaded, evil, liberal Democrats don’t gain another seat in Congress, maybe, just maybe, in God’s grace huge numbers of people would be gloriously converted/saved/regenerated. And maybe then, our country, states, counties, cities, and neighborhoods would look a bit more like the heavenly city that we ultimately long for, and praise God, ultimately one day will inhabit and enjoy.
