In this month’s issue of Money magazine (p.34) is an article trying to shed light on how much is too much money to spend on your child’s celebration of them turning 16, or their coming of age party. Get this, the average, AVERAGE, cost of a sweet 16 party: $10,000! A bar or bat mitzvah? $9,500! A Latino Quinceanera (coming of age party for a 15 year old girl)? $8,000!
I cannot imagine anyone, anyone spending that much money on a teenage party. Our wedding and honeymoon didn’t cost that much and we went to Jamaica!
My 16th birthday party was a bunch of guys over for Pizza Hut and video games. The pizza was undercooked so that the dough was the texture of canned biscuit dough. It was unedible even for 15/16 year old boys. As a perk of turning 16, I was allowed to drive my mom’s car. A 1978 Mercury Cougar with an orange leather/synthetic material roof, complete with orange interior, carpet and all, with no cassette player!
10k for a sweet 16 party, with tuxes, formal gowns, limos, catering? Truly unbelievable.
