I’ve started doing something new from time to time as I spend my quiet time with God in the Word. With technology today, there are so many pictures of places in Israel that it is very easy to get at least an idea of the places and things that OT characters were likely to be experiencing firsthand in the accounts of Scripture that we read. So I Google places using the image search from time to time to get such ideas as I meditate on things like, what was David thinking, what was David feeling, what were the natural difficulties David experienced living on the run?
I’m reading through 1 Samuel right now and in chapter 23, David is running for his life, after the men of Ziph, a city he saved from the Philistines try and deliver him unto Saul. God provides a way out as David is on the run, as Saul is forced to cease chasing David and turn his attention to a Philistine attack elsewhere. That place is called the Rock of Escape and from there David went and holed up in the strongholds of Engedi.
What might the strongholds of Engedi look like? What type of refreshing might David have enjoyed there having just escaped Saul’s grasp again? What might David’s prayers of thanksgiving to God for His saving grace sounded like as he looked around at God’s provisions in Engedi. I think it might have looked something like this. Click on the picture and wonder with me how refreshing God’s grace must have been to David as He prayed, rested and meditated on God in a location such as this.
