For my money, there is no better author out there who
consistently nails a single truth on the head in a succinct and meaningful
manner and then couples it with very practical steps on how to cultivate that
truth in your life than C.J. Mahaney. I
highly recommend all that he has written.
Here are a few quotes, thoughts from his latest book, Humility
(soon to be a new 1 on 1 discipleship study at CPC). I hope this post will encourage and provoke
you to read this book and seek to cultivate this attribute of Christ (Phil 2:8) in your life,
for I think we can all say, or better we all should say with C.J., “ . . . I’m
a proud man pursuing humility by the grace of God.”
“The real issue here is not if pride exists in your
heart; it’s where pride exists and how pride is being expressed
in your life.”
“Pride is when sinful human beings aspire to the status and
position of God and refuse to acknowledge their dependence on Him.”
““God opposes the proud” – (James 4:6, 1 Peter 5:5). “Opposes” in this statement is an active, present-tense verb showing us that God’s opposition to pride is an immediate
and constant activity. The proud will
not escape discipline.""
In a future post, I’ll give you a taste of Mahaney’s
practical steps you can take to see God begin cultivating in your heart an
intuitively humble response to life. Until then, think about those quotes above, meditate on those Scriptures
listed, and let the Spirit give you insight to your own soul.
