Some interesting notes from one of the latest editions of Newsweek (March 6th):
Despite the ridiculous gushing onslaught for "Brokeback Mountain" as a treasure trove of deserved Oscar winners, the movie received no spike in ticket sales as a result. Usually when obscure or objectionable movies get overwhelming media attention, more people go out to see what all the buzz was about. Not so for Brokeback. In fact the article says, that the ticket sales have declined every week since it started getting all the Oscar publicity. This says two things. Homosexuality is not mainstream; that all the people who knew what the movie was portraying and wanted to see it, did. Otherwise, the public did not support it.
Along similar lines, "DePaul University in Chicago recently announced that it’s offering a new "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Queer Studies minor. That wouldn’t normally turn heads (several universities have similar offerings), but dePaul is the nation’s largest Roman Catholic university – and the Vatican’s official teachin is that homosexuality is "objectively disorded.""
So it’s possible to major in Religous Studies of which DePaul’s website says the following:
"The department is committed to DePaul’s Catholic,
Vincentian heritage, and invites all its majors to take advantage of
the unique opportunity to explore the history, culture and thought of
the Roman Catholic tradition."
And then minor in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgendered and Queer studies.
Am I missing something here? 😦
