In the Feb. 15th edition of the Wall Street Journal is an article on who the Army is now offering a kinder and gentler boot-camp experience! Can you believe that? In an effort to keep enlistees from dropping out, we are now having sensitive chats with new recruits when they first arrive to boot-camp rather than the traditional screaming in your face, baptism by fire introduction to what life as a soldier is like. Drill sergeants have been instructed to alter their styles and procedures, even down to no longer being able to restrict overweight enlistees from taking desserts and drinking sodas at meal times.
"Once feared drill sergeants have been ordered to yell less and mentor more. "Before, our drill sergeants’ attitude was ‘ you better meet m standard or else.’ Now it’s ‘I am going to do all I can to assist you in meeting the Army standard.’""
This is amazing to me. Haven’t we already proven to ourselves that this approach to training (public school system) DOES NOT WORK?!
Thank God we still have the Marines. Semper Fi!
